Super Smooth Smoothies!

Year 2 have been looking at instructions and in particular ghow to make a healthy fruit smoothie. The children have been looking at the story of 'The Billy Goats Gruff', in relation to the their current topic ...Once Upon  A Time.
The children were hoping to convince the troll to become vegetarian  and to possibly give up eating goat!

As whole classes the children watched how to make a strawberry and banana smoothie.

They used their maths skills to divide fruit into quarters.

Also which fruits can be eaten with the skin off or on.

The mixture was blended until it was very smooth..

The children were then given the opportunity to sample the smoothie..

Going down well!

We just hope the troll likes it more than billy goat !!
The next step now is independent writing using the plans they have created.

Moving mechanisms -D.T

Year 2 have been investigating moving mechanisms. To do this they have created some really beautiful background images of stormy seas which relate to their learning about the story of Grace Darling and her heroic rescue of stranded sailors many years ago.

To do this the children use white oil pastels to resist the watercolour paint that they applied.

They used their tonal skills to blend the colours for their backgrounds.

Some of the scenes were really stormy!

#

Once the backgrounds were completed and dried they were then able to add their lighthouse's which they drew on paper using pencil crayons and outlined using black felts.

To create the movement in their pictures Grace was dawn on paper and stuck onto a lollipop which was then inserted in a slit in the scenery.

There were some great facial expressions!!

Attached to a lollipop

Once attached ...Grace was free to row backwards and forwards.

The difference between each design was wonderful...thank year 2 for all your hard work!

Can a material change it's shape?

Year 2 have been looking at different types of materials and asked themselves the question...Can a material change it'shape?
First of all they made predictions as a group by looking at a range of different objects made from different materials. Could these materials change their shape if they were ....squashed...bent....twisted or .....stretched? They createda fair test by keeping the materials the same and the type of forces they were to use.

Then the fun began!!!!!

Metal cans needed some serious force to change their shape!

Results were recorded using a table

What can you do with a towel?

Shamir says you can twist it.

You can squash Blu tac.

Iusua says you can also squash a towel.

The results were building nicely.

Cor! You can definitely stretch a rubber band! Careful!!

Now what can i do with a paper straw?

The meatl pipe cleaner could really twista nd bend!

Sahrmake had great fun twisting and bending his metal paper clip.

"Nope!" says Ibrahim ...you cant stretch a ruler!

Year 2's conclusion... some materials can definitely change there shape but it often depended on how much more you had to apply.
